Our CSA A CSA is definately a learning experience. The 2007 season went well. We had 30 members, up from just 8 in 2006. There were 17 weeks of deliveries. An early frost on the 14th of September killed 95% of the tomatoes, the beans and all vine crops. We were able to get out 2 more weeks with fall plantings of greens, beets, carrots, and lots of potatoes. We had a real bumper crop of beans, with each subscriber getting over 15 lbs of them. Most subscribers felt they got too much of some things with not enough of others, we plan to do our best to remedy that for 2008.
3 Subscription Options -
Veggie Lovers Box: This weekly box is filled with all the veggies you love with a taste of the more exotic! There will be lots of the more common vegetables, veggies you can eat raw or frequently buy in the store. THere will be tastes of: less common veggies, rare varieties of common vegetables, fruit and herbs. This box is for you if you want farm fresh veggies grown with no chemicals from a local farmer. Price: $350 plus $25 delivery fee if not picked up at the farm
Whole Hog Box: This box will be similar to the Veggie Lovers but with MORE! It will include more of the uncommon veggies plus more herbs, fruit, flowers and eggs, when available. We're planning for a half dozen eggs a week if the chickens do as they should. If you love to cook, experiment with new recipes and try new and exotic things, this will be the share for you! There will only be a limited number of these shares, it may already be sold out! Price: $450, plus $25 delivery fee if not picked up at the farm
Flower Subscription: It was a bit of an experiment for 2007. You get a bouquet every week that will consist of about 25 stems or the equivalent in size. Obviously 25 stems of sweet peas would be nice, and 25 sunflowers would be overwhelming. We're not sure how many weeks this flower share would cover (17 total in '07, with 2 being before the veggies started) and its possible there may be weeks where there are no flowers available. Some bouquets in '07 were small, as flowers didn't do well in the drought of June and July, and we will work for more variety this year. We guarentee a minimum 10 bouquets, could be as many as 20, Price: $150, must also have a vegetable subscription too.
Also... With your subscription you will have input into the types and varieties of vegetables we grow. You are also invited to come to the farm on "open farm" days or at other times by appointment. We will have 2 "Down on the Farm Days", one in May and September. While here you can help in the garden, learn to milk a goat, gather eggs or just enjoy the wide open spaces. We are also having Work Saturdays, where every 2nd Saturday June thru September you can come out and help in the morning, and possibly get some extra produce if we've got it.
You’ll also receive a weekly newsletter with a list of what you’ve received and directions on handling your produce. Don’t know what to do with kale? Don’t worry; we’ll give you recipes as well. Most will be fairly quick and easy but we’ll have a few that are more gourmet. We also have a Monthly newsletter as well that we send via email, no email, we'd be happy to mail it to you.
Pick-up Locations: As of now our pick up points are in Edina (limited amounts), Long Lake, Waconia and here at the farm. Days and times of the pick-ups will be determined later. Your first box of produce, full of greens and rhubarb, should be ready by the end of May or first week of June, your last box should be in Oct. or even Nov., depending on the weather. The last boxes should contain squash, rutabagas, carrots and kale. In 2007, the first box was delivered the first week of June, and the last was the second week of October.
We did have a drop off point in New Ulm, MN at the Bohemian Bed and Breakfast, visit them at www.the-bohemian.com. They will still be using lots of farm fresh veggies in your breakfasts, just not from us. We wish them all the best!
