Bev got her first horse when she was 6 and began training horses by the time she was 11. She has always loved these animals and always will. Her own girls got their first ponies as soon as they could sit on a horse, 2 and 4 years old. Her grandson got his at 6 months old! Needless to say horses are one of our favorite things. We currently have 8 horses on the farm.
Riding Lessons! Want to learn to ride? What makes a horse tick? Or would you someday like a horse of your own? Our lesson program is designed to teach you what you need to know to really enjoy horses.
At present we have two lesson horses. Shelby is a large pony who loves little children, but is big enough to handle an older child or small adult. Shelby's former joy was as the personal pony to a 4-year-old. Our second horse is Jack 4 Spot, a registered Appaloosa gelding, whose great-grandfather was Secretariat! At 16.1 hands, he's big enough for most any rider, but calm and gentle enough for even the most timid.
At this time we can do private lessons on either Shelby or Jack or semi-private if the riders will fit for both Shelby and Jack. We also have a lesson program using just one horse with up to 4 different riders. This “family plan” has proven a good match for families or friends.
Costs: Private lessons: $35
Semi-private: $25 per rider
“Family Plan”: $25 per rider with class time of up to two hours.
We also offer a “Get to Know Horses” class that does not include riding. This can be helpful for parents of horse crazy kids or for people who love horses but don’t feel up to riding. $20.
Discount plans may be available, just ask!
Training!
Training is still a small part of our operation. We’re hoping that it will become a larger part as we find the resources to expand our operation. At this point we are offering two kinds of training.
Basics for Weanlings: This is a great opportunity to wean your foals and educate them at the same time. We accept foals from 3 months to 7 months. We prefer to keep them for at least 2 months but sometimes other arrangements can be made.
Your little one will come home knowing how to lead, stand tied under supervision, clip, load and stand for the farrier. This good foundation will stand him in good stead as he goes further in his training. $400 per month includes board.
Help for Your and Your Horse: This training is for you, so that you can further your horse’s education on your own. For now this is offered at your own farm or stable and within 30 miles of our farm. This training consists of a one hour lesson weekly with a written lesson plan for you to follow during the week. The next time I visit we’ll evaluate your progress and go on from there. $35 per lesson. As time allows I can travel farther for $60 per lesson.
