Right now our flocks consist of a number of breeds and mixes.
Mixed Banties: These birds make up all of our free-range stock and come with a story. About 20 years ago someone left a very large box in my driveway. When I opened it, an explosion of banty chickens followed! There have been a few birds added from time to time, but they all descend from that first box of birds that contained every breed of banty known to man. Since then, these birds are loose in the barn, they are very good at hiding their eggs and we've had a population explosion. Most of these birds will be for sale as soon as our other heritage breeds start laying.
Marans: A French breed known for the dark color of their egg shells. These are big, calm birds that make good table fare as well. We hope to hatch a few of these birds.
Buff Catalana: These pretty, buff colored birds with black tails are very rare in the US.
Buff Crested Polish: This is a very old breed and a very interesting looking one. They are lean chickens with a crazy hairdo! We just have one pair of these, but hope to hatch out more.
Dorking: We have only one pair of white Dorkings just now, but I'm hoping to get more chicks this spring. This is the breed that the Romans brought to Britain. I hope that they become our main breed.
Ameraucana banties: I have a trio of tiny Ameraucanas who should start laying as soon as the days get longer. They should have light green eggs or perhaps even pink or blue. I can’t wait to see.
Right now we have some chickens that are free-range and some that are confined. As time goes on and numbers grow we plan to have all of our chickens enjoy running through our bit of woods just like their jungle fowl ancestors.
